Lesson Title: Today we are learning about
Where do organisms get their energy from?
Remember to check for PROGRESS
Focus on Knowledge, Skills and Understanding
Success Criteria: You will show your learning by...
  1. A food chain shows how energy passes from one organism to another.
  2. Food chains begin with a producer, which is normally a green plant.
  3. Green plants get their energy from the sun through photosynthesis.
  4. Organisms that eat other organisms are called consumers.
  5. The first consumer in a food chain is called the primary consumer. The second the secondary consumer and the third the tertiary. The final consumer is called the top consumer.
  6. Animals that hunt other animals are called predators, they are unlikely to be primary consumers.
  7. Food webs are formed by combing the multiple food chains in an ecosystem.
  8. How organisms affect, and are affected by, their environment.
  9. A change in the population of an organism in a food web will affect the other organisms in the food chain. This is known as interdependence.
Think about how you can match the needs of ALL students

AFL/Key Questions:
  1. What does a food chain show?
the interdependence of organisms in an ecosystem, including food webs and insect pollinated crops
  2. What do food chains start with?
Food chains begin with a producer, which is normally a green plant.
  3. How do plants get energy?
Green plants get their energy from the sun through photosynthesis.
  4. What is a consumer?
Organisms that eat other organisms are called consumers.
  5. What is the second level in a food chain called?
The first consumer in a food chain is called the primary consumer. The second the secondary consumer and the third the tertiary. The final consumer is called the top consumer.
  6. What is an animal that hunts another animal called?
Animals that hunt other animals are called predators, they are unlikely to be primary consumers.
  7. How is a food web difference to a food chain?
Food webs are formed by combing the multiple food chains in an ecosystem.
  8. What is it called when changes in a population of one species affect the population of other species?
A change in the population of an organism in a food web will affect the other organisms in the food chain. This is known as interdependence.

Learning Phases/Episodes
Think about how you can match the needs of ALL students
Differentiation: AGT, SEND, LLL, Disadvantaged
Remember to check for PROGRESS
Starter Activity Differentiation and Challenge question/task
  • Students to copy and complete the keywords.
  • Teacher reveals missing letters; Students correct mistakes;
  • Discuss the scientific meanings of the words.
  • Students to write down the definitions of the most important / new keywords.
  • Discuss the 'Memory Anchor'.
    • What does it show?
    • How does it relate to the what we are learning about today (title)?
Think about PACE – Develop, consolidate and deepen knowledge, skills and understanding
