Lesson Title: Today we are learning about
What is diffusion and how does it work?
Remember to check for PROGRESS
Focus on Knowledge, Skills and Understanding
Success Criteria: You will show your learning by...
  1. Concentration is the number of a particular type of particle in a volume of space.
  2. Diffusion is the movement of a substance from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.
  3. Particles in a fluid are always moving.
  4. Horizontally, half the particles will be moving to the left and half to the right.
  5. Half of a large number is more than half of a smaller number. So more particles will travel from a larger number of particles (high concentration), than are replaced by the smaller number moving form the smaller number of particles (lower concentration).
Think about how you can match the needs of ALL students

AFL/Key Questions:
  1. What is concentration?
Concentration is the number of a particular type of particle in a volume of space.
  2. What is diffusion?
diffusion in liquids and gases driven by differences in concentration
  3. What happens to the particles in a fluid?
diffusion in terms of the particle model
  4. Why do particles move from an area where there are more to where ther
Half of a large number is more than half of a smaller number. So more particles will travel from a larger number of particles (high concentration), than are replaced by the smaller number moving form the smaller number of particles (lower concentration).

Starter Activity Differentiation and Challenge question/task
  • Students to copy and complete the keywords.
  • Teacher reveals missing letters; Students correct mistakes;
  • Discuss the scientific meanings of the words.
  • Students to write down the definitions of the most important / new keywords.
  • Discuss the 'Memory Anchor'.
    • What does it show?
    • How does it relate to the what we are learning about today (title)?
Think about PACE – Develop, consolidate and deepen knowledge, skills and understanding
