Lesson Title: Today we are learning about
How are hormones involved in reproduction?
Remember to check for PROGRESS
Focus on Knowledge, Skills and Understanding
Success Criteria: You will show your learning by...
  1. Students should be able to describe the roles of hormones in human reproduction, including the menstrual cycle.
  2. During puberty reproductive hormones cause secondary sex characteristics to develop.
  3. Oestrogen is the main female reproductive hormone produced in the ovary.
  4. At puberty eggs begin to mature and one is released approximately every 28 days. This is called ovulation
  5. Testosterone is the main male reproductive hormone produced by the testes and it stimulates sperm production.
  6. Several hormones are involved in the menstrual cycle of a woman.
  7. Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) causes maturation of an egg in the ovary.
  8. Luteinising hormone (LH) stimulates the release of the egg.
  9. Oestrogen and progesterone are involved in maintaining the uterus lining
  10. (HT only) Students should be able to explain the interactions of FSH, oestrogen, LH and progesterone, in the control of the menstrual cycle
  11. (HT only) Students should be able to extract and interpret data from graphs showing hormone levels during the menstrual cycle.
Think about how you can match the needs of ALL students
Keywords:
  • Uterus: The part of the female reproductive system where a fertilised egg will mature into fetus. (1)
  • Puberty: The period at which an organism begins to mature into an adult. (1)
  • Reproduction: The process of creating offspring from one or two parents. (1)
  • Hormones: Chemical messengers that travel in the bloodstream. (1)

AFL/Key Questions:
  1. What do reproductive hormones do to the body during puberty?
During puberty reproductive hormones cause secondary sex characteristics to develop.
  2. What is the main female reproductive hormone and where is it produced?
Oestrogen is the main female reproductive hormone produced in the ovary.
  3. What is ovulation and how often does it occur?
At puberty eggs begin to mature and one is released approximately every 28 days. This is called ovulation.
  4. Where is testosterone produced and what is its role?
Testosterone is the main male reproductive hormone produced by the testes and it stimulates sperm production.
  5. Is there just one hormone involved in the menstruation of women or are there several?
There are several hormones are involved in the menstrual cycle of a woman.
  6. What is the role of follicle stimulating hormone?
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) causes maturation of an egg in the ovary.
  7. What is the role of luteinising hormone?
Luteinising hormone (LH) stimulates the release of the egg.
  8. Which hormones are involved in maintaining the uterus lining?
Oestrogen and progesterone are involved in maintaining the uterus lining.
  9. (HT only) How do FSH, LH, oestrogen and progesterone interact in the menstrual cycle?
(HT only) FSH causes the ovaries to secrete oestrogen.
  10. Which of the hormones shows the sharpest spike in a graph of hormone levels during the menstrual cycle?
LH shows a sharp spike to cause the release of an egg (ovulation) and then drops down low after it.

Starter Activity Differentiation and Challenge question/task
  • Students to copy and complete the keywords.
  • Teacher reveals missing letters; Students correct mistakes;
  • Discuss the scientific meanings of the words.
  • Students to write down the definitions of the most important / new keywords.
  • Discuss the 'Memory Anchor'.
    • What does it show?
    • How does it relate to the what we are learning about today (title)?
Think about PACE – Develop, consolidate and deepen knowledge, skills and understanding
