Lesson Title: Today we are learning about
What is a genome?
Remember to check for PROGRESS
Focus on Knowledge, Skills and Understanding
Success Criteria: You will show your learning by...
  1. Students should be able to describe the structure of DNA and define genome.
  2. The genetic material in the nucleus of a cell is composed of a chemical called DNA.
  3. DNA is a polymer made up of two strands forming a double helix.
  4. The DNA is contained in structures called chromosomes.
  5. A gene is a small section of DNA on a chromosome. Each gene codes for a particular sequence of amino acids, to make a specific protein.
  6. The genome of an organism is the entire genetic material of that organism.
  7. The whole human genome has now been studied and this will have great importance for medicine in the future.
  8. Students should be able to discuss the importance of understanding the human genome.
  9. This is limited to the: - search for genes linked to different types of disease - understanding and treatment of inherited disorders - use in tracing human migration patterns from the past.
  10. Each nucleotide consists of a common sugar and phosphate group with one of four different bases attached to the sugar
  11. DNA contains four bases, A, C, G and T.
Think about how you can match the needs of ALL students
Keywords:
  • Genome: The order of all the bases in the entire DNA of an organism. (1)
  • Gene: A sequence of DNA that codes for a protein. (1)
  • Polymer: A long molecule made of smaller repeating units joined together, (1)
  • DNA: the molecule of inheritance made of nucleotides joined together and containing 4 different bases. (1)

AFL/Key Questions:
  1. How is the structure of DNA described and what is a genome?
DNA is a polymer made up of two strands forming a double helix. The genome is the set of chromosomes in each haploid cell in an organism.
  2. Where is DNA found in a cell?
    Nucleus
  3. What is the structure of DNA like?
DNA is a polymer made up of two strands forming a double helix.
  4. How is DNA contained in the nucleus?
The DNA is contained in structures called chromosomes.
  5. What is a gene?
A gene is a small section of DNA on a chromosome. Each gene codes for a particular sequence of amino acids, to make a specific protein.
  6. What is a genome?
The genome of an organism is the entire genetic material of that organism.
  7. Why is the study of the human genome important?
    Develop medicines in the future
  8. What is the importance of sutdying the human genome?
finding genes linked to different types of diseases, treating inherited disorders, using in tracing human migration patterns in the past
  9. What is the structure of a nucleotide like?
Each nucleotide consists of a common sugar and phosphate group with one of four different bases attached to the sugar
  10. What are the letters used for the four DNA bases?
    A, C, T and G.

Learning Phases/Episodes
Think about how you can match the needs of ALL students
Differentiation: AGT, SEND, LLL, Disadvantaged
Remember to check for PROGRESS
Starter Activity Differentiation and Challenge question/task
  • Students to copy and complete the keywords.
  • Teacher reveals missing letters; Students correct mistakes;
  • Discuss the scientific meanings of the words.
  • Students to write down the definitions of the most important / new keywords.
  • Discuss the 'Memory Anchor'.
    • What does it show?
    • How does it relate to the what we are learning about today (title)?
Think about PACE – Develop, consolidate and deepen knowledge, skills and understanding
