Lesson Title: Today we are learning about
What is food security?
Remember to check for PROGRESS
Focus on Knowledge, Skills and Understanding
Success Criteria: You will show your learning by...
  1. Students should be able to describe some of the biological factors affecting levels of food security
  2. Food security is having enough food to feed a population.
  3. Biological factors which are threatening food security include: ? the increasing birth rate has threatened food security in some countries ? changing diets in developed countries means scarce food resources are transported around the world ? new pests and pathogens that affect farming ? environmental changes that affect food production, such as widespread famine occurring in some countries if rains fail ? the cost of agricultural inputs ? conflicts that have arisen in some parts of the world which affect the availability of water or food.
  4. Sustainable methods must be found to feed all people on Earth
  5. (WS) Interpret population and food production statistics to evaluate food security.
Think about how you can match the needs of ALL students

    AFL/Key Questions:
    1. What are the biological factors that affect food security?
The production of plants and animals for food ultimately depends on the factors that control plant growth - light availability, available nutrients and water in the soil, and competition with other plants.
    2. What does food security mean?
Food security is having enough food to feed a population.
    3. What are some of the Biological factors which are threatening food security?
The following factors are threatening food security: -Increased birth rate. -changing diets in developed countries means scarce food resources are transported around the world -new pests and pathogens that affect farming. -environmental changes that affect food production, such as widespread famine occurring in some countries if rains fail -the cost of agricultural inputs -conflicts that have arisen in some parts of the world which affect the availability of water or food.
    4. What type of method should be used to feed all people on Earth?
Sustainable methods must be found to feed all people on Earth
