Lesson Title: Today we are learning about
What is neutralisation?
Remember to check for PROGRESS
Focus on Knowledge, Skills and Understanding
Success Criteria: You will show your learning by...
  1. This reaction can be represented by the equation: H (aq) OH-(aq) -> H2O(l)
  2. In neutralisation reactions between an acid and an alkali, hydrogen ions react with hydroxide ions to produce water.
  3. The pH scale, from 0 to 14, is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, and can be measured using universal indicator or a pH probe.
  4. A solution with pH 7 is neutral. Aqueous solutions of acids have pH values of less than 7 and aqueous solutions of alkalis have pH values greater than 7.
Think about how you can match the needs of ALL students
Keywords:
  • Neutral: A substances that has a pH of 7. Equal number of OH- and H ions (1)

AFL/Key Questions:
  1. How is the reaction between hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions to produce water presented as an equation?
This reaction can be represented by the equation: H (aq) OH-(aq) -> H2O(l)
  2. How is water produced in a neutralisation reaction between an acid and an alkali in terms of ions?
In neutralisation reactions between an acid and an alkali, hydrogen ions react with hydroxide ions to produce water.
  3. What piece of digital equipment can be used to measure the pH of a solution?
A digital pH probe can be used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a solution more accurately and precisely than universal indicator.
  4. What pH values do each of acidic, alkaline and neutral solutions have?
A solution with pH 7 is neutral. Aqueous solutions of acids have pH values of less than 7 and aqueous solutions of alkalis have pH values greater than 7.

Think about how you can match the needs of ALL students
Differentiation: AGT, SEND, LLL, Disadvantaged
Remember to check for PROGRESS
Starter Activity Differentiation and Challenge question/task
  • Students to copy and complete the keywords.
  • Teacher reveals missing letters; Students correct mistakes;
  • Discuss the scientific meanings of the words.
  • Students to write down the definitions of the most important / new keywords.
  • Discuss the 'Memory Anchor'.
    • What does it show?
    • How does it relate to the what we are learning about today (title)?
Think about PACE – Develop, consolidate and deepen knowledge, skills and understanding
