Smart Alloys

As we have seen alloys can be designed to have properties for specific uses. One relatively new type of alloy is the 'Smart Alloy' or 'Shape Memory Alloys'. So called because can return to their shape after being deformed, generally when heated. The heating can be done by passing an current through the smart alloy wire.

This technique has been used to create muscle wires to control robots and even model railway switching points. Smart alloys are also used for applications such as braces and spectacles. Items made out of Smart Alloys will 'spring' back to there orginal shape after being excessively deformed. Useful if you have just sat on your favourite sunglasses!

These alloys are very and are still being developed to industrial uses. It is hoped that they could replace heavier hydrolic acutators in where weight and space is at a premium, in an aeroplane, for example.
