Charge & Static

Electrical Charge is a fundamental characteristic which both and have but do not. have a positive charge while have a charge of equal magnitude.

Atoms are electrically neutral because they have the same number of and . If they gain or lose electrons we then call them , as they now have an overall electric charge.

Static electricity is the build up charge, normally on an object. This can only occur on or isolated conductors. This is because given the opportunity, excess charge will flow to earth, as earth has a lower charge (potential). When static electricity flows out of an object, the object is said to have discharged, and the object returns to electrically neutral.

When we rub two objects together friction can lead to electrons being 'knock off' one and being deposited on the other. If the object gains electrons then it becomes . If the object loses electrons it becomes charged.

When two electrically charged bodies are brought together they exert an force on each other. In a similar way to magnetic poles:

like charges ;
opposites charges

In fact this is how electrons stay in orbit around a nucleus.

Charged objects can attract small objects even if they are not charged themselves, through charges.
