Genetic Engineering

Genetic engineering involves the transfer of 'foreign' genes into the cells of animals or plants at an early stage in their development so that they develop with desired characteristics.

These animals or plants are then said to be modified. This can be used to produce useful substances such as insulin.

Diabetics are unable to produce their own insulin and therefore must inject some into their body. Synthetic Insulin is created by bacteria using human coding.

The DNA sequence that contains the code for making has been taken out of a human gene and placed into a single bacterium cell. This then multiplies by copying and dividing itself, creating millions of insulin producing bacteria.
