Drug Synthesis

Sythesis is the formation of a compound from simpler compounds or elements. In excess of 100,000 new molecules are synthesied (made) every year by the drug companies and tested to see if they are useful. Drugs are designed through a process of trial and error. Scientists often use computer modelling to make these tests and predictions.

synthesis is the adding together of molecules stage by stage. This results in product per stage.

synthesis when we add together many different molecules and we are not in control of how they join up so we end up with of different conbinatations and therefore products.

We endevour to use the limited resources out planet has in the most effective way. If new molecules are developed without removing these resources for future generations it is known as . We can calculate the of a reaction using the equation:

Atom Economy = Mass of wanted product x 100%
Total mass of reactants
